What is Pickleball?

Pickball is a sport of hitting the ball with a racket, which originated from the island of Benbridge in Seattle, United States. It is most appropriate to say that it is a mixed sport of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It was invented by two people. The name Pickball comes from a dog, one of the inventors; When the trial game was first invented, the dog named Pick often ran with a ball in his mouth.

Characteristic

In terms of physical activity and range of motion, pique ball has a greater range of motion and activity than table tennis, so it is better for exercising than table tennis. The amount of activity and physical activity of badminton is smaller than that of tennis and badminton. People who are not very active in playing badminton or tennis are suitable for playing badminton as a regular exercise. Pik balls are suitable for all ages. Especially for those who have played tennis in the past but have lost the opportunity to continue playing (some jokingly call it “senior tennis”), or for those who are looking for more intense sports such as table tennis or badminton, pique is an excellent choice. In addition, due to the fact that the required court and equipment for playing badminton are cheaper than tennis, some people jokingly refer to it as “poor people’s tennis”.

Site

The field for badminton is exactly the same as that for badminton. The ball used is the size of a tennis ball, a thin shell hollow ball made of hard plastic, with 26 holes with a diameter of about 1 centimeter. The horizontally held racket is shaped like a larger ping pong racket, originally made of wood and made of lightweight fiberglass, EVA, PE materials, honeycomb paper, mixed materials, and carbon fiber board.

Rule

serve
Pik ball serves with the following pitching gesture, with the contact surface (serving point) between the ball and the racket located below the waist.
Downthrow gesture: The arm must move upwards along the arc direction, and the point of contact between the racket and the ball must be lower than the wrist (the racket does not include the handle, and the highest point of the racket cannot be higher than the wrist).
Double rebound rule
In the first round after serving, the receiving team must first allow the ball to land and rebound once on their own court before hitting the ball;
Similarly, before receiving a return ball from the opponent, the serving party must first allow the ball to land and rebound once on their own court before hitting the ball.
Serving position
Positioning: When serving, both feet must stand outside the baseline.
Serve: The ball must be hit with a racket before landing. The ball must land in the playing area diagonally opposite the court and must not press against the non interception line.
Serve sequence, edge selection, positioning, and substitution
Firstly, the winner is determined by tossing a coin or other means. The winning side has the priority to choose the side or choose to receive the serve. If the winning side chooses the side, then the losing side chooses to receive and serve. If the winning side chooses to receive the serve, then the losing side chooses the side. After each game, the serving order and court positions of both sides are exchanged.
Singles
At the beginning of each game, the right player serves first. If the player has always held the right to serve, they will take turns serving on their left and right sides after scoring. When a player serves on the right, the serving team’s score is always even (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…), while when a player serves on the left, the serving team’s score is always odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9…).
doubles

  1. Serving always starts from the player on the right-hand side. If the player can retain the right to serve, they will take turns serving from the left and right serving areas.
  2. The serve must be placed in the playing area diagonally opposite and must not exceed the non interception line.
  3. When the server serves from the right side, the score of the serving team is always even (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…). When the server serves from the left side, the score of the serving team is always odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9…).
  4. The first player to serve in each game can only allow one mistake. If there is a mistake, the right to serve will be handed over to the opponent, and the server’s teammates will not have a chance to serve. Starting from the second ball, two players from each team will each have one serving opportunity, until both players of the team lose their serving qualification due to mistakes. Afterwards, the serving qualification will return to the opposing team.
  5. For each point earned by the server, they should switch to the other side of their own team to serve. After the first server makes a mistake, their teammates continue to serve from the side where they made the mistake.
If the ball is played by the wrong player or from the wrong serving area, it is counted as a serving error.
  6. The receiver should stand diagonally opposite the server and behind the baseline.
When receiving a serve, only the receiver can return the ball. If the ball is returned by its teammate, the serving team will score. The teammate of the receiver can stand anywhere on or off the field.
  7. When the receiving team receives and serves the ball, the team member cannot exchange positions. In the process of playing (consecutive matches after serving and before making a mistake), the receiving team member can switch positions. After the fight, the player must return to their original position.

Present situation

Pickball is an emerging sport. In the United States, approximately 2.5 million people engage in this sport year-round. Pik ball has become a common sport in high school physical education classes and is gradually becoming more common among young and elderly people. Just in New York State, there are over 500 schools that have a curriculum for playing badminton. Every year in many cities, states, and countries in the United States, there are competitions for the sport, as well as national associations for the sport.
